Strategic Public Relations (SPR)

CONSULTATION SERVICES

SPR DISCIPLINES: three sample conversations

Media Relations and Publicity.                                                                             You no doubt have expertise in these areas.  But if you wish to expand your knowledge base, what better way than to consult with someone with three-decades of SPR experience?  Questions: if your employer or client asks about your media contacts in a specific industry, would you have a satisfactory answer even if you had few or no contacts?   Do you know how to write effective pitch or query letters, and how to best follow-up for the best chance of publication or coverage?  Do you know how to plan and implement a multi-media publicity or image campaign?  I do.

Crisis-Problem Management.                                                                               This is a valuable discipline you should learn to master.  To establish yourself as the point-person/adviser in an effort to reverse, neutralize or mitigate negative media and public reaction, you must first gain the trust of your employer or client.  Then: research all the facts, form an ad-hoc committee for decision-making, prepare a Rapid-Response Action Plan, designate the spokesperson (you?), and prepare a fact-sheet, a Q-and-A sheet, an official statement and a media release.  Then strike!  It is important to get your message out first* to prevent misunderstandings or misinterpretations, and manage media and public inquiries professionally (courteously).  Conduct a post-mortem review of the results so you can improve future crisis plans.  *NOTE: the Tylonol  case history is a model of the wisdom of striking first; the Exxon cover-up a model of how delay is destructive.

Image-Building and Reputation-Enhancement.                                                   There are many ways to accomplish these vital components of your SPR arsenal.  We will be happy to discuss methods, tools and techniques with you, and provide samples and examples: like positioning a Playboy Resort as 'family friendly', reversing negative publicity and public opinion of a manufacturer that polluted a stream to the extent it received the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award from President Clinton (1993), advising a state legislator through five terms in office until he became a U.S. Congressman now in his third term, et al.  Most SPR disciplines are one part learned technique and two parts instinct and common sense.

PR Proposals and Plans.                                                                                        Every  public relations practitioner, from expert to novice, at some point has labored over how to create convincing proposals and effective Action Plans.  You can sharpen up your efforts through general or specific consultation with me by e-mail or telephone. And remember, there are no charges or strings attached for the initial consultation, and all subsequent activity is guaranteed to be very affordable.  Or, if you prefer, first order my guidebook, All PR is Local, and review many of the proposals and plans that worked well for me and my diverse clients over the years.
